The three most significant causes of mouth cancer

Mouth cancer is an important topic because it affects many Americans each year. Unfortunately,
many are not aware of how to prevent it. Because early diagnosis is critical for successful treatment,
this is an important subject.

The three most frequent causes of mouth cancer include smoking, drinking alcohol, and having the
human papillomavirus (HPV) in the mouth and throat.

Below, we will explore each of those factors, their role in oral health, and what can be done to
prevent mouth cancer.

Tobacco smoking and oral health

Smoking cigarettes, cigars, and pipe is harmful to the mouth and the body. The mouth is directly
affected by the smoke produced and indirectly affected by the effects of nicotine and other harsh
chemicals present in tobacco.

Smokers present 10 times higher risk for developing mouth cancer. Unfortunately, smokeless
tobacco is not free from causing health issues.

You should reduce the number of cigarettes per day if you smoke, as the risk for cancer increases
with heavier smoking.

For smokers, regular dental and medical follow-ups are critical to prevent disease.

Drinking alcohol and its impact on the mouth

People who have alcoholic drinks frequently have a higher risk for mouth cancer. The cells inside the
mouth are directly exposed to alcohol when a person drinks, which can lead to damage.

In the US, alcohol abuse is defined as 21 standard drinks per week. Reducing the amount of alcohol
consumed can lower the risk for health problems.

As with smoking, if you drink regularly, dental and medical follow-ups are vital to avoid disease.

HPV in the mouth and throat

This common virus is transmitted from person to person through the skin. It typically causes no harm
but can infect the mouth and throat cells.

Most mouth cancers are linked to the presence of HPV. Hence it is a good idea to have a saliva test
done.

The test can identify the presence of HPV and guide preventive actions from your dentist and
healthcare provider.

Prevention is the best course of action. The best ways to prevent mouth cancer are limiting smoking,
drinking, and having a saliva test for HPV.

You can order your saliva test for HPV online from OralGenetix. Avoid doubt, take control of your
health from the comfort of your home.
